Should you change your podcast host?

Recently a change occurred.

I moved my podcast from Libsyn to Captivate. Honestly, I should have done it years ago.

The decision came as my wife and I were trying to figure out how to market her new online second-hand book shop.

We wanted to share it with our existing podcast audience but new there were so many people stil listening to the old episodes.

We wanted to create a couple of ads to play at the start of episodes.

It’s almost 2025. This shouldn’t be a big ask.

But it was.

So we packed up the podcast and transferred it over to Captivate in an afternoon.

Does your host give you what you need?

Our podcast makes money through its Patreon page and affiliate partners.

But one day, our affiliate partner told us they were changing their terms. Now, instead of just using the discount code and link, our audience would have to add a specific product, and then add the discount, only after clicking our link to make a commission.

In other words, we stopped making commissions.

And it’s because we couldn’t update old episodes, which is something other hosts can provide.

The same goes for running ads for our Patreon. We’ve had some creative ideas, but adding to older episodes feels like a pain in the ass.

What about my stats?

This is what held me back the most from changing hosts. I didn’t want to lose my total downloads number.

I was clinging to that number as a point of pride. I felt like I needed that total downloads number to be high to justify keeping on going.

Which is ridiculous.

That was entirely my ego holdling me back. When if I’d swapped sooner I could have made more money. So instead I chose higher downloads instead of higher paychecks…

So if that’s you. Don’t let fear hold you back. Change to a podcast host who exist in this decade and are helping you grow your podcast.
